A successful family photo session requires planning, coordination, and a relaxed attitude. Here are some tips to ensure great results:

Before the Session

  1. Choose the Right Photographer – Pick a photographer whose style matches your vision. Take a look at my portfolio and see if my style matches yours. I like to capture both posed and relaxed vibrant images with a golden glow that will look amazing printed in your home.
  2. Pick a Good Location – Consider outdoor settings like parks for natural lighting, or an indoor studio for controlled conditions. With my studio located in Manhattan, Kansas I can provide either style depending on what you prefer!
  3. Plan Outfits Wisely – Coordinate colors but avoid being too matchy-matchy. Stick to neutral or complementary tones and avoid loud patterns or logos.
  4. Schedule at the Right Time – Make sure the kids are rested and fed. Golden hour (shortly after sunrise or before sunset) provides the best lighting. I typically shoot my outdoor sessions in the evening one hour before sunset. This provides the best light (not too harsh) and a beautiful golden glow.
  5. Prepare the Kids – Let them know what to expect and keep it fun. Bring small treats or favorite toys for cooperation.
  6. Communicate with the Photographer – Share your vision, must-have shots, and any special requests in advance.

During the Session

  1. Relax and Have Fun – The best shots often come from natural interactions rather than forced poses.
  2. Engage with Each Other – Laugh, play, and show affection—it creates warm, candid moments.
  3. Be Patient – Kids (and sometimes adults!) may take time to warm up, so go with the flow.
  4. Use Natural Movement – Walking, holding hands, or playing together can create dynamic and authentic shots.

After the Session

  1. Let the Photographer Edit – Trust their editing process for the best results.
  2. Print and Display – Don’t just leave photos on your phone—print them for albums, frames, or gifts! I highly recommend ordering prints directly from my online gallery. Not only is it easy and convenient but the quality is so much better. You've already invested in your memories so don't skip this step!
